REVEALED: The surprising airline named the safest in the world – as Australia’s Qantas is bumped from its top spot and drops FAR down the list

The carrier beat out 384 other airlines to be named the 2022 winner by with Qantas coming in at seventh place.

The ratings website looks at a number of factors including the incident rate of airlines in the last two years, safety innovations, crashes in the last five years, and Covid-19 safety protocols.

Air New Zealand operates successfully in some of the most remote environments and challenging weather conditions, the website’s editors noted.

The planes in the airline’s fleet were also all comparatively new, with the average aircraft age just 6.8 years.

And the airline has been at the forefront of implementing technical safety improvements.

The safest airline was named as Air New Zealand with the ratings website saying they were setting the benchmark for safety in the industry (pictured: Sydney airport in November)

These include the Future Air Navigation System for pilot to ground communication and Required Navigation Performance for precision approaches around mountains in cloud conditions.

‘Air New Zealand has excelled across the broad safety spectrum never losing sight of the smallest detail while caring for its flight crews who have worked under significant stress,’ AirlineRatings editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said.

At the number two spot is Etihad Airways based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
